Conservation of the billfish
Guatemala was the first country to enact into law the protection of the sailfish. The gubermental agencies in charge have been working side by side with the sport fishing community to help control and balance the incidence of bycatch. Several programs have been developed to help substitute the illegal fishing of billfish by the artisan fishermen by providing them with alternate commercial species through the use of artificial reef formations and new ecosystems.
Catch & Release is a must within the sport fishing community. You will not be able to pursue a size record, but certainly a personal best in the amount of sailfish releases you achieve per day.
The use of circle hooks became the norm very early on, helping show the rest of the fishing community their benefits both from a conservation standpoint as well as a tool to catch more billfish.
